Class J fuses have a standardized, rejection-style ferrule design, so they require a dedicated Class J fuse holder or fuse block — they will not fit standard Class H or Class K holders. Any 600V-rated Class J holder from brands like Bussmann, Littelfuse, or Ferraz Shawmut will accept this fuse.
The Gould (Shawmut) A4J series is considered a legacy/obsolete line in many markets. Functionally equivalent replacements include the Bussmann JKS-10, Ferraz Shawmut HSJ10, and Littelfuse JLLS010 — all Class J, 10A, 600V fast-acting fuses. The A4J10 is a fast-acting (non-time-delay) fuse, which means it is generally best suited for protecting transformer primaries, lighting circuits, and equipment without high inrush currents. For motor branch-circuit protection — where startup inrush current is a factor — a time-delay Class J fuse (such as the Gould A4JT or equivalent) is typically recommended to avoid nuisance tripping.
