The Normally Open (N/O) contact remains open when the contactor coil is de-energized and closes when the coil is energized — commonly used for run-indication signals or enabling downstream circuits. The Normally Closed (N/C) contact does the opposite — it is closed at rest and opens when the coil energizes — often used for interlocking or fault/stop signalling.
