The Square D HJL36040 is a molded-case circuit breaker in the HJL frame, rated 3-pole, 40A, 600V, 25kA with an I-Line plug-in mounting configuration. It is designed to install in Square D I-Line panelboards and switchboards that accept HJL-frame plug-in breakers — typical in commercial and industrial distribution systems, not residential loadcentres.
Have a specific Square D I-Line panelboard or switchboard? Send us your panel model and we'll confirm fitment.
No. The HJL36040 uses Square D's I-Line plug-in mounting system, which is a distinct bus connection design used in commercial and industrial I-Line panelboards and switchboards. It is not interchangeable with Square D QO or Homeline residential breakers, nor with standard bolt-on MCCB mounting. Your panelboard must specifically be designed for I-Line plug-in breakers for this unit to fit correctly.
The Square D HJL-frame I-Line series has seen limited availability through standard distribution channels. Northern Breaker Group specialises in hard-to-find and obsolete breakers across Canada, and we maintain stock of or can source legacy Square D I-Line breakers. Contact our Calgary, Edmonton, or Vancouver counters or request a quote online and we'll check current availability for you.
In many Canadian commercial and light industrial installations, a 25kA interrupting capacity at 600V is adequate, particularly when the breaker is applied downstream of a main protective device that limits available fault current. However, fault current levels vary significantly by service size and proximity to the utility transformer. We recommend confirming the available short-circuit current (ASCC) at your panel with your electrical engineer or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before selecting this breaker for your application.
