A tandem (duplex) breaker like the QO2020 fits into a single one-pole slot but contains two separate 20A breakers, each protecting its own circuit. This lets you add a circuit to a panel that is full without replacing the loadcentre — provided the panel is rated and the specific slot is approved for tandem use.
Not necessarily. Square D QO loadcentres have a defined tandem-breaker schedule that limits which slots can accept tandem units. Exceeding the panel's tandem allowance is a code violation. Always check the directory on the inside of your panel door or the panel's spec sheet to confirm which slots are tandem-approved.
